
A 4.9 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale shook the city of Tena, the capital of the Amazon province of Napo, in north-central Ecuador. The Geophysical Institute of the South American country reported that the tremor occurred at 06:05 local time, at a depth of 12 kilometers and 35.44 kilometers from Tena.
So far, authorities have not reported any possible victims or material damage caused by the earthquake. This event followed another tremor of magnitude 5.5 registered on Friday in the same city of Tena, according to data provided by the Geophysical Institute.
The National Secretariat for Risk Management also indicated that the tremor was felt in 44 cantons of 12 Ecuadorian provinces. Additionally, the agency stated that the event triggered two aftershocks: one of magnitude 4.2 with an epicenter in the city of Latacunga, in the central province of Cotopaxi, and another of magnitude 3.7 in Tena, Napo province.
The national government, through its institutions, is conducting continuous monitoring and working coordinately to ensure the safety of the population in light of these seismic events, according to Xinhua.
