Carnival 2026 Road Report in Ecuador

Ecuadorian authorities summarized the road situation during Carnival 2026. A decrease in fatalities compared to last year was noted, but the number of drunk driving cases increased.

Despite the high traffic, authorities noted that this year, fewer people traveled to the interior of the country compared to Carnival 2025, when five fatal victims were reported. As for sanctions, over 8,000 tickets were issued for regulation violations, mostly for speeding. Police units remain deployed along the Pan-American Highway, monitoring traffic flow and ready to reverse lanes if congestion occurs. The unfortunate incident occurred on Sunday night when a man was killed by a hit-and-run in the Los Andes area. He was the only fatal victim in traffic accidents during the holiday days. The final call is clear: drive calmly, respect speed limits, and do not mix alcohol with driving, so the celebration does not end in tragedy. By 6:00 a.m. today, 115,000 had already returned to the capital, while around 34,000 vehicles still remain in the interior. Some 149,000 vehicles left the city heading to the central provinces to enjoy Carnival. The exodus to the interior also showed clear numbers. The road balance of Carnival 2026 left one fatal victim and over 8,000 tickets issued nationwide, figures that authorities consider positive compared to previous years. The goal is to avoid traffic jams and ensure the return occurs without major incidents. Also, 466 drivers were caught driving under the influence of alcohol, a figure that increased compared to last year and maintains authorities' concern.
