The President of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, announced through his social media account that the lack of proper planning has been responsible for the consequences of the floods that affect certain areas of the country every year. This statement was made public on Monday in a news item highlighted by the RFI site.
The heavy rains that hit Ecuador over the weekend resulted in the tragic death of eight people, according to the National Secretariat for Risk Management (SNGR). ManabĂ and Loja were the regions hardest hit by the precipitation, which began on Friday and caused destruction to road infrastructure and homes. There were landslides and river overflows in various parts of the country.
In response to the emergency, 14 temporary shelters were activated where 593 people received assistance, according to French media reports. Although January was a rainy month in Ecuador, the rainfall this weekend exceeded all forecasts, causing severe damage.
President Daniel Noboa ordered the coordination of the Ministries of Transport and Interior to act jointly in the province of ManabĂ and address the crisis resulting from the heavy rains.
