Ecuadorian authorities reported that 647 people were detained during the country's popular referendum. Complaints of identity substitution were also registered.

According to the Argentine News Agency, the National Police stated that 68 detentions were related to warrants; 95 to arrest orders; 587 to administrative citations (582 of them for selling alcoholic beverages); and 5 for attempting to vote while drunk.

Meanwhile, during the electoral day, complaints were filed about attempted identity substitution in the localities of Manabí and Jaramijó. In both cases, it was individuals who tried to vote with other people's documents.

Ecuadorians went to the polls to answer "Yes" or "No" in the popular consultation, which includes a question on whether they agree to convene and install a Constituent Assembly to draft a new Constitution. Voters also had to pronounce themselves on three other referendum questions: eliminating the prohibition on establishing foreign military bases in Ecuador, reducing the number of legislators, and eliminating state funding for political parties.
