The Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (SRE) of Mexico categorically rejected the link to alleged criminal acts in Ecuador directed against President Daniel Noboa and his ministerial cabinet, with which Mexico has no diplomatic relationship.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Foreign Ministry responded to reports from Ecuadorian media citing a message from the Armed Forces of Ecuador dated April 17. In that message, a warning was issued about an alleged transport of hitmen from Mexico and other countries to Ecuador with the intention of carrying out terrorist attacks against the president and his team.
The SRE stated: "The Secretariat of Foreign Affairs strongly rejects the creation of narratives that allude to Mexico as a source of alleged criminal acts and is guided by the principle of non-intervention." Furthermore, it recalled that Mexico severed relations with Ecuador after the assault on its embassy in Quito in 2024, considering it a serious violation of international law.
The Government of Ecuador, for its part, declared itself on high alert following a report from the Joint Command of the Armed Forces that warned about the alleged planning of terrorist attacks against the president and his cabinet. According to the report, these acts would be carried out by criminal organizations after the elections in which Noboa was reelected.
Since 2024, Ecuador has been in internal armed conflict, with President Noboa declaring war on organized crime gangs, which he has labeled as terrorists. These criminal organizations have been responsible for the escalation of violence in the country, making it one of the most violent in Latin America.
The break in relations between Mexico and Ecuador occurred after the assault on the Mexican Embassy in Quito, where there was an attempt to detain Jorge Glas, former vice president of Rafael Correa's government. This incident marked a moment of high tension between the two countries, following the expulsion of the Mexican ambassador due to statements from former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador regarding the assassination of a candidate in 2024 and its impact on the elections won by Noboa.
