Ecuadorian authorities have alerted about transfers of hitmen from Mexico and other countries with the purpose of carrying out terrorist attacks against the President of the Republic and his closest collaborators. According to an intelligence report from the Joint Command of the Armed Forces of Ecuador, signed by Colonel Rolando ProaƱo, various cartels, mainly from Mexico, intend to perpetrate an attack against President Daniel Noboa following his reelection.
Amid the existing tension between Mexico and the United States due to drug trafficking, the news is relevant. Recall that Ecuador and Mexico cut diplomatic relations a year ago when President Noboa ordered the storming of the Mexican embassy in Quito to arrest former Vice President Jorge Glas.
For its part, the government of Claudia Sheinbaum in Mexico has not recognized Noboa's victory, alleging fraud, despite international observers dismissing such accusations. Domestically, the Ecuadorian President is facing conflicts since 2024, when he declared the country in armed conflict with the aim of combating criminal violence through a hardline policy, seeking support from allied conservative nations.
"The state is on high alert... the Armed Forces, the National Police, and intelligence agencies are coordinating efforts to neutralize any threat," emphasized Noboa. The president attributed the assassination plot to "criminal structures in complicity with defeated political sectors," pointing to the Mexican cartels as possible culprits, although without providing specific details.
In light of this situation, a strong statement was issued condemning any attempt on the life of the President, state authorities, and public officials. The intelligence report warns about the planning of possible terrorist attacks and violent protests in the country, recommending reinforcing the President's security to prevent any eventuality.
