The president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, recently announced the imposition of a 27% tariff on products imported from Mexico. He stated that Ecuador is open to trade integration but will not tolerate abuses, referring to the demands made by the Mexican government during trade negotiations. Despite this measure, Noboa expressed that he remains willing to establish a Free Trade Agreement with Mexico.
In response to this decision, the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, made comments dismissing the quality of Ecuadorian shrimp and mentioning that Sinaloa shrimp are superior. In light of this, José Antonio Camposano, Executive President of the National Chamber of Aquaculture, responded by respecting Sheinbaum's taste but indicating that Ecuadorian shrimp is widely acclaimed in more than 60 countries.
The Ecuadorian government justified the imposition of tariffs as a measure to promote the local industry and ensure fair treatment for producers. Despite the controversy generated by this decision, Ecuador has not yet specified when it will begin to apply the tariffs.
