Daniel Noboa Runs for Reelection in Ecuador

Daniel Noboa is the youngest president in Latin America and in the democratic history of Ecuador. At 37, he seeks reelection for a full term (2025-2029). During his fourteen months in office, he has stood out for his tough stance against organized crime, which has generated controversies and led his opponents to denounce an alleged dictatorial attitude.

Noboa surprised many by winning the extraordinary elections of 2023 at the age of 35. At that time, he faced a country with high homicide rates in Latin America and a significant fiscal deficit. His communication style is characterized by being direct and blunt, leaving many politicians whom he criticizes for belonging to what he calls "the old Ecuador" without a response, associating them with corruption or narcopolitics.

Coming from a powerful family in Ecuador, Noboa is the son of Álvaro Noboa, a banana magnate and former presidential candidate, and former assembly member Annabella Azín. Raised in a political environment with education from prestigious foreign institutions, he initially dedicated himself to the family businesses before entering politics as an assembly member in 2021.

Noboa has generated controversy in several aspects of his presidency. His conflict with his vice president Verónica Abad, whom he sent as ambassador to Israel and later suspended from office, has been a contentious issue. He has also taken unpopular economic measures, such as raising VAT and reducing gasoline subsidies, without causing social unrest.

The president has been accused of acting authoritarian and capriciously, but he is also recognized for his political shrewdness in implementing reforms without generating significant protests. His firm stance against organized crime has been one of the hallmarks of his administration, although he has made controversial decisions, such as the police raid on the Mexican Embassy to arrest Jorge Glas, a former correista vice president.

Despite his detractors, Noboa presents himself as a politician of few words, direct and determined in his actions. His presidency has been marked by controversies and a communication style based on social media, where he appears active and close to the youth. Noboa is noted for his modern dressing style and his openness to fashion, reflecting a fresh and youthful image in his public appearances.
