Alert for Possible Assassination Attempt on President Noboa

Ecuador's military issued a warning about potential assassination attempts against elected President Daniel Noboa ahead of the elections, citing threats from hitmen from Mexico and other countries.

Alert for Possible Assassination Attempt on President Noboa

The Joint Command of the Armed Forces (Comaco) of Ecuador alerted about possible attacks against the elected president Daniel Noboa by criminal groups, including hitmen from Mexico and other countries. A statement dated April 17, 2025, revealed that information from the Armed Forces' Intelligence indicated the movement of hitmen towards Ecuador with the intention of carrying out terrorist attacks against Noboa and his team.

The document also mentioned the planning of attacks on bridges, banks, and state institutions, as well as the possibility of violent protests in the streets. The alert generated concern in the country, especially after Noboa's recent victory in the elections.

The Minister of Government of Ecuador, José de la Gasca, confirmed the authenticity of the statement after its dissemination on social media. So far, Ecuadorian authorities are taking measures to safeguard the security of the elected president and his environment.

On the other hand, the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, ruled out the possibility of resuming relations with Ecuador while Daniel Noboa remains in office as president. Sheinbaum described Noboa's re-election as "questionable," citing reports from the Organization of American States that questioned the legitimacy of the elections.

Amid diplomatic tensions between the two countries, Sheinbaum highlighted that other Latin American leaders, such as the presidents of Colombia and Venezuela, have expressed doubts about Noboa's election. Mexico's stance remains firm in not restoring relations with Ecuador under Noboa's presidency.

It is worth noting that the relationship between Mexico and Ecuador was previously affected by an incident in 2024, when the Ecuadorian police stormed the Mexican Embassy in Quito to arrest Jorge Glas, former vice president of Ecuador, leading former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador to break diplomatic relations.
