Ex-Ecuador President Correa demands investigation into Noboa

Former Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa demanded an investigation into current President Daniel Noboa following accusations from drug lord Wilmer Chavarría, alias Pipo. Pipo, without providing evidence, alleged that Noboa ordered the assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio in 2023 and was involved in drug trafficking. In an interview with EFE, Correa admitted that «you can't believe a guy like that,» especially since he faked his death in Ecuador and underwent numerous plastic surgeries to avoid capture. However, he believes the accusations «at least warrant an investigation.» The former head of state pointed to double standards in his country, adding that «Noboa is a man without limits or scruples… It wouldn't surprise me if he ordered someone's murder.» Correa also stated that «if Pipo had accused me, they would have believed him right away, leading to raids and arrest warrants.» Pipo's statement was made in Spain, where he has been in custody since November. Correa noted that Pipo did not accuse him but instead targeted Noboa, calling it «a miracle that makes me want to cry.» Fernando Villavicencio was gunned down on August 9, 2023, after a rally. At the time, polls were led by correísta Luisa González, while both Noboa and Villavicencio himself had low approval ratings. Noboa ultimately won the election.
