The Ecuadorian National Service for Comprehensive Attention to Adults Deprived of Liberty (SNAI) reported today, on Tuesday, that as a result of a riot in the Guayaquil prison, 116 people died. The incident occurred when staff began a special operation to confiscate prohibited items in the penitentiary institution. The prosecution states that large-scale clashes began when members of rival gangs tried to defend their territory and exert control over the inmates.
The Vice Minister of Internal Affairs of Ecuador stated that five prison staff members were injured in the clashes. According to some data, the cause of the clashes was a confrontation between territorial gangs. "We need to completely reform our execution system," he added.
The incident in Guayaquil prison is one of the deadliest in Ecuador in the last ten years. There was an announcement for the transfer of all gang leaders to different facilities in the country to prevent further incidents occurring in the penitentiary.
